In these fragile times, we have all moved far from what our ancestors knew. The perspective of modern (patriarchal) society leads us to believe that there is endless progress that leads toward a future of technological advancement. Yet, our human experience as daughters of earth leads us to very different understandings: “Time is cyclical, not a straight line. Every season has lessons for living. We are in partnership with animal nations.” These expressions of the nature-based wisdom of our foremothers still have much to teach us. In this intensive we will reach back to meet those ancestors by writing, reading, moving, making art, and deep discussion around these issues.

Some of our explorations will be based on the research of Marija Gimbutas, whose groundbreaking work explored thousands of female figures and prehistoric art in Europe and Eurasia. Her discoveries provided evidence for the existence of successful woman-centered cultures of a Great Goddess, long before the rise of warrior societies. We will also look at new discoveries by other archaeologists, psychologists, and anthropologists, and thought-provoking works by contemporary women. We will, where appropriate, include words and wisdom from Indigenous teachers. In the process, we hope to re-learn and re-member our own inherent female powers and skills for survival in ancient and modern times.
