Goddess Limericks - Part II
by Donna Fay Reeves
The Celtic Morgana le Fay
Was the ruler of Avalon by day,
Healer and shape shifter
King Arthur’s half sister,
She made entering death’s mystery okay.
The Egyptian winged Goddess called Isis
Resurrected her husband Osiris
Finally all but his phallus
Lay to rest in the palace,
When she cries, the River Nile rises...
The Mideastern Goddess of abundance
Lillith gave agriculture and fecundance
As Adam’s first mate
She would not subjugate
Like the Lotus she grows out of darkness
The Mayan Moon Goddess Ix Chel
Had the power to make the sick well,
As the Moon waxed and waned,
For a thousand years she reigned,
Her weavings had stories to tell.
The Egyptian cat goddess called Bast
Like the Moon and the Sun, her light cast,
Both protective and playful
Independent and joyful,
At her festivals worshippers danced
Mother Gaia existed before time,
She created the ooze and the slime,
All things born from her womb,
Must return to her tomb,
Her replenishing power is prime
Queen Hathor gave birth to all gods,
Within her there’s nothing at odds,
As a cow or a cat,
She creates or takes back,
Her wish is fulfilled when she nods
Persephone’s mother Greek Demeter
Wept when Lord Hades abducted her
She rejoiced every Spring,
When she came back again
When she left again it became winter
Aphrodite was radiant and shining,
Her name was invoked by the pining
For both passionate love
And the spirit above
By her help we can all be combining
The Cherokee Grandmother Spider
Brought the People the Sun and the Fire,
She taught them to weave,
To make pots and believe,
That to Think, Dream, and Name takes us higher
