SEASONAL POEMS for a Mediterranean Climate
SUMMER
by Debby Zygielbaum
So This is Summer
So this is summer -
I had not known you
like this before
This outside angle
of kids screaming their
temporal freedom
My inside work continues
among aire acondicionado
despite the insect buzz
of child play in the
summer heat
Relief
Cool oak shade
renewal amongst
sunny summer grass
Summer Color
Screaming heat rises to a wailing pitch when
the storms have stopped
bakes the wild oats to a rustling golden brown
Such exotic color for hills that should have hummed husky green Summer hues
of fescue and oaks
But exotics spread fire wild
across our land
Worries
Has it always been this hot? Even on the coast?
What other changes have come - other exotic introductions that are too sly for immediate notice?
Container
blue, blue sky holding
basin
precious wet hopes of
winter to drink
in the thirsty summer
Summer Hunter
Sinewy spider webs flash
Sinewy spider webs spin
weaving twisting waiting
for prey -
I’m too big
the web must be re-spun
again
