Goddess Limericks - Part I
by Donna Fay Reeves
The Virgin Diana from Greece
Took as lovers whomever she pleased
With her dog and her bow
Through the moonlight she’d go
In a tunic of flax to her knees
The Hawaiian volcano Pele
Was really the Goddess they say
Offerings thrown down her crater
Will hopefully placate her
Or lava will spew every which way
White Shell Woman of Navajo
Brought beauty wherever she’d go
Gifts of shells turned to food
The People’s lives were good
And all was harmonious, Ho!
The Love Goddess Venus from Rome
Was born on a shell from sea foam
She had passion and grace
And a beautiful face
And she beckoned her converters to "Come!"
Inanna the Goddess from Sumer
Resurrected her son-consort-lover
Underworld, the Queen of Heaven
Dropped her veils numbered seven
Was reborn when each winter was over.
The Creator from Babylon Ishtar
Was both the morning and evening star
Like Innana, she’s reborn
Her zodiacal belt is worn,
She’s the Goddess of Time, Love, and War
Eve was the Motyher of Life
She was much more than just Adam’s wife,
She created the world
With her circle snake curled
She’s related to all that’s alive
The Virgin Athena from Greece
Often counseled her warriors to Peace
Both creative and skilled,
She was wise and strong-willed
And she gave heaven’s fire to Prometheus
Ancient one Artemis the Huntress
Resides in the Untamed Wilderness
Independent and alone
She is fierce to the bone
She’s the Lady of Beasts and Protectress
The Goddess from China Kuan Yin
Had compassion for women and men
Sprung from Buddha’s tears,
Our suffering she hears,
As a mortal her name was Miao Shan
