Winter Solstice Altar

Walking through these 7 Sisters Mountains, I asked Goddess how  would She like to appear this Winter Solstice Night.  Suddenly and silently, a Deer stepped out of the woods.  We both held our breaths and stared into each other’s eyes as the world stood still.  Her fur had taken on her gray winter’s coat and she was absolutely stunning in beauty and grace.  The very next morning, stepping out onto my porch and into the first fallen snow, there she stood again!  And I have not seen deer in my yard for over 8 years now.  So, here She is as our Winter Solstice 200017 Hearth Altar.  Have no doubt in your hearts that  She especially came to be with you.

Included is a song written by Carolyn Hillyer and I will let the words and spirit speak for themselves.  Remember, it is the female reindeer who carries her antlers throughout the winter as she protects and leads her people on the Path.  She also shares with us her ability to see in the winter’s dark.  As a result of seasonal changes in light levels, reindeer eyes adapt.  Her tapetums — the part of the eye behind the iris — change color from gold in the summer to blue in the winter.  In these Season of Magic, may you find yourself riding on your special Reindeer through the dreamtime and shaman time this long Winter’s Night.

Bless Her Harts!

  --OLD REN--

Old Ren she came down to the lake

her eyes they shone so wild and cold

she lifted her antlers to the stars

and across the frozen years she called…she said:

your roots are in the glacial blue

though lands may change and times may roll

with a thousand mothers underneath your skin

you’ll  keep your reindeer soul.

Old Ren she came down to the lake

her feet laid deep prints in the snow

she showed us where to look for the trail

that she left so long ago…she said:

your roots are in the glacial blue

though  lands may change and times may roll

with a thousand mothers underneath your skin

you’ll  keep your reindeer soul.

Old Ren she came down to the lake

she reached to take us by the hand

she said:  you are my ancient daughters

and I trust you with this land

your roots are in the glacial blue

though lands may change and times may roll

with a thousand mothers underneath your skin

you’ll keep your reindeer soul.

The open moors are singing

as we walk down by the stream

of reindeer herds that once traveled here

where Ren and her lake had been…they sing:

your roots are in the glacial blue

though lands may change and times may roll

with a thousand mothers underneath your skin

you’ll keep your reindeer soul.
